Salon für Kunstbuch in Vienna is offering a six-month Erasmus+ traineeship focused on artists’ books, independent publishing, graphic design, publication production, archiving and digital communication.
The trainee will participate in the development and production of new artists’ books and editions. The position combines computer-based design work with practical printing and book-production processes.
Tasks include image editing and layout using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign; preparing print-ready files; assisting with Risograph printing; producing mock-ups and prototypes; folding, collating, binding and finishing publications; and contributing to the visual and editorial development of new publication projects.
The trainee will also assist with the archive of artists’ publications. This includes cataloguing publications, researching bibliographical information, writing short descriptive texts, photographing books, editing images and entering information into the digital archive.
A further area of work is the co-management and development of Salon für Kunstbuch’s social-media presence. Tasks include preparing visual material, developing short-form content, photographing publications and producing short videos for social-media platforms.
The work is carried out under professional guidance. At the same time, the trainee should be able to organise clearly defined tasks independently and contribute their own visual and conceptual ideas.

Other job requirements
Applicants should have a strong interest in artists’ books, independent publishing, graphic design and archival practices.
Good practical knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign is required. Applicants should be interested in computer-based tools, technical workflows and digital production processes.
Experience with video-editing software is an advantage but is not essential. Applicants should be willing to develop skills in producing short videos and other digital content for social media.
Manual skills and an interest in printing, paper, bookbinding and publication production are important. Previous experience with Risograph printing is useful but not required.
The trainee should work carefully and precisely, organise files and information systematically, and be able to complete defined tasks independently. An interest in research, writing, photography and archival documentation is expected.
Good written and spoken English is required. German is useful but not mandatory.
Applicants should submit a CV and a portfolio containing examples of graphic design, editorial design, photography, publication projects or related work.
